SKIN CANCER – GENERAL INFO
Skin cancer is by far the most common form of cancer. Approximately one million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. Of these over 40,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Of these 40,000 people, over 7,400 will succumb to their disease.
The other forms of skin cancer include the basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinomas. These, while not as pernicious as melanoma, can be very disfiguring.
A variety of factors are responsible for the alarming rise in skin cancer. The increasing popularity of outdoor activities. Changing clothing styles that permit more skin to be exposed to sunlight. Sun-tanning beds that allow year round ultraviolet damage to the skin. The depletion of the ozone layer. Other environmental factors.
